Our Journey
1870s
Foundation & Early Years
St. James the Less was founded in Ashland as a small parish committed to faithful worship and community service. From its earliest days, the church became a spiritual anchor for the growing town, welcoming parishioners and serving as a place of prayer and fellowship.
Early-Mid 1900s
Growth & Expansion
St. James grew as Ashland developed. The parish expanded its facilities, deepened its programs, and strengthened its commitment to youth education and formation. Music and liturgical excellence became hallmarks of worship.
1980s–1990s
Outreach & Mission Focus
St. James deepened its commitment to serve the broader community. The parish launched new outreach initiatives, expanded youth programs, and became increasingly intentional about welcoming all people—regardless of background or circumstance.
2010 & Beyond
Free Clinic & Contemporary Mission
St. James established its free clinic to serve uninsured and underinsured community members—a direct expression of Christ's love for the vulnerable. Today, the clinic provides medical and dental care to hundreds annually. Noah's Ark expanded, youth programs deepened, and the parish remains committed to inclusivity, especially affirming LGBTQ+ members and people of all backgrounds.

St. James the Less is a thriving, multigenerational parish that honors our 150+ year heritage while remaining open to God's future. We worship faithfully, serve boldly, and welcome all people into our community. Our mission—rooted in Matthew 25:35–36—guides us to see Christ in the faces of those we serve.
